Policy

8 key issues

This is what we intend to do.

💼

Economy

A strong economy is the foundation of prosperity.

  • We want to work with businesses to drive growth and new opportunities in the region.

  • We will simplify regulations and lower property taxes to support small and medium-sized businesses.

  • Increase commercial lots in town.

  • Lower property taxes to stimulate growth and innovation.

  • Akureyri must be a strong counterweight to the capital region. That's why we support local business.

🏗️

Development

We continue building and push further.

  • We will increase housing across all price ranges with special focus on first-time buyers.

  • Start residential development on Oddeyri.

  • Increase parking in the town centre.

  • Housing clusters for seniors who want to downsize.

  • We will speed up infrastructure development so lots are buildable on time.

  • Spread fees over the construction period to make home building more accessible.

📚

Education

Akureyri should be the best place to raise children.

  • Abolish the waiting period! People should not have to watch the calendar to have children. Admit to preschool twice a year.

  • We need to find ways to increase flexibility in preschool services in cooperation with staff regarding care hours and summer holidays.

  • We will improve specialised support for students and teachers within schools.

  • We will strengthen music education and increase collaboration between music schools and regular schools.

  • We will advocate for expanded course offerings and push for the University of Iceland to offer distance learning.

✈️

Transport

Better transport delivers multiplied returns in economic growth.

  • Akureyri Airport is not just an alternate airport. It should be a second gateway to the country.

  • With increased frequency and continuity of flights, we strengthen tourism, business, and quality of life.

  • We will improve walking and cycling paths to promote public health and reduce carbon footprint.

  • We will advocate for shortening the route between Akureyri and Reykjavík.

🤝

Senior citizens

Health and social life of the elderly at the forefront.

  • Build a community hall that meets the needs of senior citizens.

  • A quality-of-life hub with waste heat from the data centres.

  • Fight social isolation, e.g. with the Men in Sheds project.

🎭

Culture, sports & community life

The goal is clear: Akureyri as the cultural capital of the North.

  • Complete the KA area and start building a sports hall at the Þór area.

  • Support development of the Akureyri Car Club area.

  • Start building a new 9-hole golf course at Jaðar and prepare a new course at Skjaldarvík.

  • Strengthen Akureyri as Iceland's Winter Sports Centre and improve facilities at Hlíðarfjall with a new chairlift. And expand the parking!

  • Support regular summer concerts to enrich cultural life and create a platform for musicians.

  • Revitalise Rósenborg and breathe life into the area.

  • Begin design work on a 50-metre indoor competition swimming pool.

  • Add a hot tub to the Nökkvi facility.

  • Build new storage facilities for the Akureyri Museum.

📉

Tax reduction

Property taxes have risen excessively. We will change this.

  • Available fiscal space will be used to lower property taxes for residents and businesses.

  • We will streamline administration to fund ambitious services.

  • We will restrain price increases.

  • We will review municipal properties and evaluate their roles to maximise utilisation.

🏛️

Central government

We work systematically with the government.

  • Expanding and strengthening Akureyri Hospital is key for settlement in the Northeast.

  • A new Coast Guard helicopter unit will be based in Akureyri.

  • VMA (vocational school) will be expanded and nursing home construction accelerated.

  • Push for transport improvements to Skógarböð.
