Þórhallur Jónsson

Seat 1 · CEO & deputy town councillor.

I was born in Hafnarfjörður on 24 May 1966 but moved to Akureyri as a one-year-old. At age ten I moved with my parents to Bahrain in the Middle East and attended an American school for two years. The family then moved to Bali, Indonesia, but at 13 I was sent home and started school at Gagnfræðaskólinn in Akureyri.

As a teenager I worked at the Akureyri youth centres, mostly at Dynheimar as a DJ. I started playing in the band H100 at 15 and by 16 I was playing in Sjallinn. I studied electronics at VMA and the Technical School in Reykjavík.

I am very much a family man, married to Inga Vestmann, and we have three children: Axel Darri, Andri Már, and Rebekka Rut. We also have five grandchildren and one on the way. Inga and I own and operate Pedrómyndir ehf., and the whole family worked in our shop on Skipagata for many years. I have worked in retail and services for over 40 years.

I was one of the founders of the Akureyri Amateur Photography Club in 1991 and served as the club's treasurer for 26 years. I was also chairman of the Town Centre Association for a time and served for a long time on the board of the Akureyri Merchants' Association, among other community involvement.

I was chairman of the Independence Party representative council in Akureyri 2024–2025, chairman of the Independence Party Association in Akureyri 2023–2024 and previously 2016–2018, and sat on the association's board 2014–2025. I was a town councillor for the Independence Party in Akureyri 2018–2022 and have been a deputy councillor since 2022. I have sat on the Akureyri planning council since 2018, was chairman 2020–2022 and vice-chairman from 2022. I have also sat on the board of Norðurorka since 2022 (previously deputy 2019–2022) and sat on the harbour board 2019–2022. I was a deputy member of the business affairs committee 2014–2015 and of Akureyrarstofa 2016–2018, so I have considerable experience in municipal affairs.

The reason I entered politics in 2018 was to get things moving. We had lived with stagnation in this town for too long, but it worked — significant development has taken place in recent years. Now I want to step up even more and keep pushing things forward for Akureyri and all of us. There is a fantastic group of people on Akureyrarlistinn who want to do good for Akureyri. Join our team this spring and put an X next to A.

Fun fact: What most people don't know is that I'm not a heavy rocker, even though I have long hair and a beard — I'm an absolute disco queen. I was raised at Dynheimar during the golden age of 80s disco music and there's nothing I enjoy more than listening to music from that era. My favourite musician is Bruce Springsteen.

Karen Sigurbjörnsdóttir

Karen Sigurbjörnsdóttir

Seat 2 · HR specialist & fleece sweater mom.

I was born in Akureyri on 14 June 1993 and have lived there all my life, apart from a few university years in Reykjavík and one winter in Norway where I attended a ski education school. I am the daughter of Örn Ívarsdóttir and the late Sigurbjörn Sveinsson and the eldest of three siblings. I am married to Stefán Waagfjörð, an air ambulance pilot at Norlandair, and together we have two daughters, Júnía, 8, and Saga, 4.

I completed a BS degree in psychology with Icelandic as a minor from the University of Iceland and later pursued part-time studies in business at Bifröst University. Since the beginning of 2025 I have worked as an HR specialist at the Hospital in Akureyri, but before that I worked in business management for several years and ran Salatsjoppan and Götubarinn together with good business partners. My husband and I have also spent the last few years building our own house and learned a great deal from that big project, including about planning and building regulations, and met wonderful people along the way.

I trained in skiing competitively from a young age well into my teenage years and have since worked on and off as a ski coach. I consider it the most fun job in the world!

The reason I am running in the second seat on Akureyrarlistinn is that I feel lucky to live in as good a community as Akureyri, where we have almost everything (except IKEA), and I feel I have something to contribute. Akureyrarlistinn is an independent list that works solely for the interests of Akureyri, and I think that is a great option. I am creative and solution-oriented and find few things more enjoyable than thinking outside the box. I believe that can serve well if I get the opportunity to influence our community.

The issues closest to my heart are family affairs, sports and recreation, and planning and building matters. I also have a strong interest in skiing and the "paradise" of Hlíðarfjall, as well as strengthening the diversity of education in rural Iceland.

Fun facts: I co-founded the Facebook group Nammitips with my namesake and friend Karen Björg, where about 27 thousand members discuss sweets, ask questions, and share advice every day. Also, I am a terrible cook!

Helgi Steinar Halldórsson

Helgi Steinar Halldórsson

Seat 3 · Real estate agent & light enthusiast.

I was born in Akureyri on 21 September 1984 and have lived here nearly all my life. I am an Akureyri native through and through and have always had a strong connection to the town – both as a home and a community. I am married to Guðný Vala and together we have two boys, Hlynur Orri (14) and Hilmir Kató (10), who keep me on my toes and remind me daily of what truly matters.

I graduated from the Vocational College of Akureyri and later completed a licence to practise as a real-estate and ship broker in 2022. Today I work as a real-estate and ship broker at Kasi fasteignir, where I work closely with people making major life decisions – buying, selling and building up. Through that work I have gained good insight into what really matters to families and businesses in Akureyri.

My career has been varied; I have worked in sales, services and project management and been involved in all kinds of business operations. Alongside that, I have for many years been active in the events and cultural scene, including as a lighting designer and project manager for concerts, town festivals and other large events. There I have learned to think fast, solve problems and make things happen – often under pressure.

At heart I am very much a "hands-on" type – I prefer to tackle things head-on, find solutions and get the job done. I have always enjoyed building something up, whether in work, projects or the community itself.

The reason I am running in seat 3 on Akureyrarlistinn is simple: I care deeply about my town and want to see it grow in the right way. I want to help shape the future of Akureyri so that it remains a strong, vibrant and attractive place for people of all ages.

The issues closest to my heart are development and planning, a thriving business community, and creating an environment where families and businesses can flourish.

A little something personal: I have a keen interest in creative projects and media – among other things I was one of the two hosts of the web series Helginn. We made 69 episodes of what today would probably be called a video podcast… at the time it was considered rather nerdy, but the project ended up on television on N4 all the same 😄

Kristrún María Björnsdóttir

Kristrún María Björnsdóttir

Seat 4 · PhD student.

My name is Kristrún María and I was born in 1991. I grew up in Akureyri where I attended Lundarskóli and Menntaskólinn á Akureyri and trained competitively in skiing.

After turning twenty I entered a period of moving around for studies and work. I went to university in Lillehammer, Norway, where I studied exercise physiology, and then did a master's degree at Reykjavík University. After that I worked in research-related jobs and for the last few years our family lived in Luxembourg.

In autumn 2024 I finally moved back home to Akureyri, richer by a husband and two children. My husband is Steingrímur Páll Þórðarson, a pilot at Icelandair, and together we have Katla (9), Björn (6), and Unnur Sóley joined the group last July.

I am a part-time lecturer and PhD student in Health Sciences at the University of Akureyri, where I work on a long-term study of the physical and mental health of young Icelanders.

Moving away from Akureyri and back again opened my eyes to how much is wonderful about our town but also how much can be done better. I am running in seat 4 on Akureyrarlistinn because I want to do my part to make this a good place for everyone to live.

Fun fact: I have been to Greenland and the Faroe Islands but have never set foot on Tenerife.

Darri Rafn Hólmarsson

Darri Rafn Hólmarsson

Seat 5 · Computer scientist & DJ.

I was born in Akureyri on 2 July 1991 but lived in Indiana, USA, for my first year while my parents finished their university degrees. I grew up on Eyrin and played basketball in my younger years while trying out nearly every instrument the Akureyri Music School had to offer. Around 10–11 years old I developed a strong interest in both rap music and DJing. There was no turning back — since then I've DJed far and wide, and my biggest musical achievements were winning the MA Singing Competition in great company in 2010 and finishing second in the National Secondary School Singing Competition the same year.

After primary school I went to Menntaskólinn á Akureyri (MA) where I had four wonderful years and served as secretary of the student association Huginn from 2010–2011. After MA I spent one semester at the sports folk high school Gerlev in Denmark, where my main accomplishment was tearing my ACL. Following that semester I set my sights on volunteer work in Kathmandu, Nepal, where I spent just over two months teaching young monks English in a Buddhist monastery. It was an extraordinary experience, and at the time I was so deeply contemplating spiritual matters that I enrolled in theology at the University of Iceland. I completed a BA in theology, but shortly after that I decided to do a complete 180 (literally) and finished a BS in computer science at HR/HA. I am therefore in the very small group of people who are both theologians and computer scientists. I currently work as a data specialist at Maven ehf. and have done so for three years, having previously worked at Advania for three and a half years.

I am engaged to Sigrún Sunna Helgadóttir and we have a daughter, Sóley Birta, with a son on the way in the coming weeks.

I am passionate about issues affecting families, strong neighbourhoods and services within them, keeping our children safe in traffic, combating isolation among the elderly, maintaining active dialogue between residents and the town council, using technology and data solutions in municipal affairs, and doing the little things that boost the atmosphere in our town. Akureyrarlistinn is made up of a driven group of people who are here to make things happen.

I have for example spoken publicly about municipal issues such as the severe lack of services in the Naustar and Hagar neighbourhoods: https://kaffid.is/nausta-og-hagahverfi-frabaer-hverfi-til-ad-sofa-i/

And about the rural issue of the University of Iceland strengthening distance learning: https://www.visir.is/g/20252721944d/thad-er-betra-fyrir-okkur-oll-ad-haskoli-islands-efli-fjarnam

Fun fact: I have shaken hands with Yao Ming. Those were some seriously big mitts.

Dana Rán Jónsdóttir

Dana Rán Jónsdóttir

Seat 6 · Specialist & biotechnologist.

My name is Dana and I was born in 1990. I grew up in Þorpið in Akureyri where I attended Síðuskóli and then went on to the Vocational College of Akureyri. So you could say I'm an Akureyri native through and through.

My husband's name is Axel Darri and together we have one child, Alexander Daði, with another on the way.

After secondary school I studied at the University of Akureyri and graduated with a BS degree in biotechnology. From there I went to the University of Iceland in Reykjavík where I graduated with an MS degree in food science with an emphasis on biotechnology. In 2025 I completed a certified board member course.

After my master's degree I lived in Reykjavík for a few more years where I worked in the export of dried fish to Nigeria, among other things. But after nearly 6 years in Reykjavík the road led back home to our beautiful town, with invaluable experience and education in my luggage.

Today I work as a specialist at the Research Centre of the University of Akureyri. There I handle various administrative projects and manage the organisation and execution of the Young People's Science School held every June.

I am a huge fan of Star Wars, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and all sorts of other nerdy stuff.

I am running in seat 6 on Akureyrarlistinn because I love Akureyri and I want to make our town even better.

Fun fact: When I was 16 I bought my first car (a Toyota Yaris) and I still own it to this day. It is still in daily use in our household and has been for the past 19 years!

Vilmundur Aðalsteinn Árnason

Vilmundur Aðalsteinn Árnason

Seat 7 · CEO & former sailor.

My name is Vilmundur Aðalsteinn Árnason and I come from Raufarhöfn. I grew up mostly there, but also at Hallgilsstaðir in Þistilfjörður.

I am married; my rock in life's stormy seas is Ýr Árnadóttir, and together we have three children: Linda Björk, Sölka María, and Nói Kalli.

I moved to Akureyri in the autumn of 1999 and, as Gunnar of Hlíðarendi once said: "Fair is the hillside, I shall not leave."

In 1997 I went to sea. I took a short break in 2003 and went to work at BM Vallá, where I worked until 2006. For most of my seafaring career I worked for Samherji, mostly as a deckhand but as a cook in the final years.

Today I run a company called Svalalokun, where I sell and install balcony enclosures and glass railings.

I think it's wonderful to live in Akureyri and I see countless opportunities to make the town even better.

Fun fact: I have never seen a single Star Wars film and I don't watch football.

Guðjón Andri Gylfason

Guðjón Andri Gylfason

Seat 8 · Secondary school teacher & biochemist.

I am an Akureyri native through and through, born and raised in the town I want to see thrive and buzz with life. I know our community, its strengths and challenges, and I care about playing an active part in shaping its future. I have two wonderful grown-up daughters and a full five grandchildren, so I am a rich man. My partner is Rita Vaskiene, originally from Lithuania, who has lived here in Akureyri for 5 years and works as a preschool teacher at Iðavellir.

I have taken a varied path in the labour market, including working in fish processing, going to sea, and running my own business. This experience has taught me to stand on my own two feet, think in terms of solutions, and push hard when it counts. It has also given me valuable insight into the lives and work of people from all walks of life. I am therefore certainly not afraid to take on new challenges.

Today I work as a secondary school chemistry teacher at Menntaskólinn á Akureyri and hold a master's degree in biochemistry as well as a teaching qualification. At the school I get to work with young people every day, listen to them, encourage them, and watch them grow. It is both a responsibility and a privilege. Education is therefore particularly close to my heart, because that is where we lay the foundation for the future. I want our young people to gain not just knowledge but confidence, resilience, and the skills to take on life at full strength.

Alongside my work I volunteer as chairman of Þór's basketball division. There I have seen first-hand the powerful work that the town's sports clubs do. Sports are vital for the health, social skills, and self-confidence of children and young people, and I want to support that work even further. Strong sports clubs are a cornerstone of a strong community.

I am running for the Akureyri town council because I want to make a difference. I want to safeguard strong schools, support the sports movement, and create more opportunities for young people to flourish. I believe in honest communication, accountability in decisions, and building the future together — with a clear vision and a real will to make things happen.

Pavel Víking Landa

Pavel Víking Landa

Seat 10 · Building contractor & carpenter.

I was born in 1983 and I am passionate about Akureyri.

I have studied macroeconomics and construction and have worked in the construction sector for the past 20 years in a wide variety of roles, from general work to running my own company. That experience has given me broad insight into the economy and the building of our community.

I have decided to take part in politics out of a sincere wish to contribute to making Akureyri an even better place to live and work. I believe we have great opportunities to strengthen the town's position and raise its visibility — not as an addition to the capital region but as a strong and independent alternative. To do so we need to create conditions that attract both families and businesses, and thereby cultivate a diverse and sustainable economy.

My three main priorities for the upcoming election are:

• Strengthening and developing the preschool and primary school system

• Ensuring more focused, long-term planning in building and construction

• Working toward the development of an international airport in Akureyri

How do I intend to achieve these goals?

As a father of two and the spouse of a teacher, I place strong emphasis on dialogue and consultation with those who know best. It is important to listen to the views and experience of teachers, parents and students. Through open and constructive conversation we can find realistic solutions that improve schools for the benefit of all. Effective change is built on cooperation, not one-sided decisions.

In planning and construction I want to promote greater professionalism and foresight, including by holding architectural competitions for key sites in the town, such as Akureyrarvöllur. I also think it is important to develop a clearer, long-term policy for the allocation of building plots that ensures stability, regardless of who is in charge of the town at any given time.

We also need to be more deliberate in our dealings with the state and defend Akureyri's interests firmly. Society is in constant development, and it is important that we respond in time to the changing needs of both businesses and families.

I will push to launch the Lífsgæðakjarni (Quality-of-Life Hub) project and thereby strengthen the infrastructure that improves residents' quality of life.

I also want to emphasise strengthening social and leisure activities for children and young people, including by reviving activities at Rosenborg and creating a wide range of opportunities there for constructive after-school projects.

Fun fact: My favourite sport to follow is ice hockey, and one of my most memorable experiences was being present at a game seven of the Stanley Cup finals.

Rannveig Hansen Jónsdóttir

Rannveig Hansen Jónsdóttir

Seat 11 · CFO.

I was born on 17 August 1964 in Akureyri, daughter of Jón Dan Jóhannsson and Ruth Hansen. I graduated from the business programme at MA in 1984, moved to Húsavík that same autumn, and lived there until the end of 2004.

I worked in Húsavík at World Minerals in the sale and export of diatomite, the last 10 years as managing director.

It was in Húsavík that I first got involved in politics. I worked with the Independence Party there and served on the Sports and Youth Committee on their behalf for a time. I didn't have far to look for the interest — my grandmother Freyja made sure of that.

After the diatomite plant closed I moved back home and worked at Eimskip for 2 years before returning to my roots, to the family business Sandblástur og málmhúðun, where I had tagged along with my dad, grandfather and other family members from childhood into adulthood, scrubbing and collecting my own pocket money.

Shortly afterwards Sandblástur and its subsidiary Ferro Zink in Hafnarfjörður merged under the name Ferro Zink, and I still work there as CFO. I enjoy my work every day — nothing has changed even though the family is no longer in charge; Ferro Zink is a strong Akureyri company owned by KEA.

I have served on various boards over the decades and currently sit on the boards of Berg félag stjórnenda and Málmur within the Confederation of Icelandic Industries.

I have 2 daughters and 5 grandchildren of my own, but I also claim the children and grandchildren of my partner Ólafur E Júlíusson — that's 3 more children and 5 more grandchildren, and yes, a few more on top of that. You can never have too many children in my opinion.

I have plenty of friends, which comes in handy so I can spread the load of joining me in whatever sport I feel like doing — cycling, skiing, SUP boarding, and most recently golf. I've put the motorcycle craze on hold for now, but I still volunteer at the Motorcycle Museum of Iceland.

I am running because I care about our town. I want public funds to be spent wisely, basic services to be in order for all age groups in the community, and priorities to be set sensibly. I believe I have solid experience and find it easy to work with people, and I can contribute that alongside the wonderful people behind this candidacy.

Fun fact: I have been in a Gin Club since 2016, along with 10 other women here in town. We "meet" regularly, taste new exotic varieties and compare different tonics — a total gin nerd with quite the collection.

Fríða Kristín Hreiðarsdóttir

Fríða Kristín Hreiðarsdóttir

Seat 13 · Primary school teacher.

My name is Fríða Kristín and I am 30 years old. I was born and raised in Akureyri, a true local through and through.

I graduated with a matriculation examination from VMA in 2015. I then started in social sciences at the University of Akureyri but soon decided to switch to teacher education, graduating as a primary school teacher in 2020. I moved south for a few years and worked as a teacher there. Today I am a class teacher for the youngest grades at Síðuskóli.

I have one three-year-old boy, Brynjar Ylur, with my husband Brynjar Árnason.

I am on the list first and foremost because of how much I care about Akureyri and want to take an active part in the conversation about this wonderful town of ours.
